About Us

The Mexican film festival in Edinburgh was born due to a large history of film in Mexico and a prominent success in the past years. The Mexican, along with the Latin American society from the University of Edinburgh conceived the idea for a film exhibition that would promote both, past and recent Mexican productions.

Mexicans in Edinburgh
Latin American Society

We are a community shaped to work as a meeting point for Mexicans currently living in Edinburgh, as well as anyone interested in coming to Scotland. The purpose is to support each other, to get together and know the country, and at the same time, maintain and share our beautiful Mexican traditions. We are positive, respectful, and transparent people, who above all, are proud of our national identity, and still, more than adapted to our surroundings.

Viva Mexico restaurant is one of sponsors during the Mexican Film Festival. It will be the host of our first screening (Macario, 1960) in the opening night; followed by some Mexican cuisine and traditional drinks.

The Gonzalez family opened Viva Mexico in August 1984, intending to bring the true taste of Mexico to Edinburgh, and 28 years later we are still striving to do the same. In the intervening years there have been many changes, notably in how the restaurant has grown, but we are still trying to do what we set out to do all those years ago - to give all our guests a real flavour of Mexico.

The popular and very well respected Stills Gallery in Edinburgh will host our second night and screening (The Violin, 2007).

Opened in 1977, Stills was Scotland’s first gallery dedicated to contemporary photography. It has darkroom and digital editing facilities and runs regular courses which help in its aim to support emerging Scottish talent. The gallery regularly commissions artists to create exhibitions, as well as hosting a residency programme for the critical and technical development of six artists over a 12-month period. It often holds special events such as workshops, poetry readings and film screenings as well as hosting specialised artist-led training programmes.
